Neither recycled nylon nor recycled polyester is automatically better for swimwear. The better choice depends on the product brief and the finished fabric: its knit construction, weight, elastane content, finishes, color process, and verified test results.
“Recycled” tells you something about the material’s sourcing; it does not tell you how the swimsuit will fit, recover, dry, retain color, or perform after repeated use. Treat the fiber family as a starting point, then approve the exact material against the way the garment will be made and worn.

What Recycled Nylon and Recycled Polyester Actually Mean
Both labels describe fibers made with recovered material, but they do not identify one standard feedstock, recycling method, recycled-content percentage, or performance level.
Recycled or regenerated nylon
Recycled nylon can be made from pre-consumer or post-consumer nylon waste, including production waste, textiles, carpets, or recovered nets. The available inputs and process depend on the supplier. Some routes mechanically reprocess suitable waste, while chemical regeneration can return a compatible polymer stream to a form used to make new nylon.
“Regenerated nylon” should not be used as a synonym for every recycled nylon. ECONYL® regenerated nylon, for example, is a specific Aquafil material made from pre- and post-consumer nylon waste through a chemical regeneration process. Aquafil states that its yarn retains the characteristics of traditional nylon 6. That producer-specific statement should not be extended to every recycled nylon fabric—or to a finished swimsuit whose construction and elastane have not been tested.
Recycled polyester or rPET
Recycled polyester is made by processing recovered PET into new resin, fiber, or yarn. Post-consumer bottles remain a major feedstock, but recycled polyester can also come from recovered polyester waste or textile-to-textile systems. The label alone does not reveal which route was used.

What changes occur during fiber recycling?
Recycled sourcing changes where at least part of the fiber input comes from and may change the processing route. It does not remove the underlying fiber chemistry or make all fabrics within a fiber family behave alike.
Feel, stretch, and recovery
Conventionally, nylon swim fabrics are often associated with a smooth hand. Stretch and recovery, however, depend heavily on the knit, fabric weight, elastane percentage, yarn quality, and finishing—not simply on whether the main fiber is nylon or polyester.
Using recycled input does not automatically reverse or guarantee those tendencies. A recycled fabric may be engineered to perform comparably to a conventional option, but that conclusion belongs to a specific material specification and test result.
Evaluate the swatch and sample in both dry and wet conditions. Check four-way stretch, recovery after extension, fit stability, and whether the fabric relaxes or bags after wear and care. Also compare the actual weight and composition; fabric GSM can affect coverage, support, and hand feel even when the headline fiber content looks similar.
Drying, chlorine exposure, and color retention
Polyester is commonly shortlisted where low moisture uptake, color retention, or pool use matters. These are conventional tendencies, not garment-level guarantees, and recycled sourcing alone does not make a polyester fabric suitable for frequent pool exposure. It also does not make recycled nylon unsuitable.
The complete blend matters. Chlorinated water can expose weaknesses in the fabric, finishes, color system, or elastane, so a generic fiber label cannot establish chlorine resistance. Define the intended exposure, then review drying behavior, recovery, shade change, surface condition, and fit after the chosen test and care sequence.
Avoid approving claims such as “chlorine-proof,” “quick-dry,” or “fade-resistant” unless they match a named fabric, a relevant test method, and the expected conditions of use.
Solid colors and printed designs
Polyester is commonly compatible with sublimation, while nylon is frequently used in solid-color fabrics or with color systems designed for polyamide. Recycled content does not, by itself, change the dye or print chemistry required by the fiber family.
What can change is the result on the selected fabric. Base shade, finish, surface texture, stretch, and heat response can influence color accuracy, hand feel, print clarity, or whitening when the fabric is extended. Which One Fits Your Swimwear Product?
For a soft, solid-color bikini or resort style, turn the desired hand feel into a physical benchmark rather than relying on a fiber label. Compare drape, recovery, wet feel, lining interaction, and the appearance of the selected shade on the garment sample.
For an all-over printed collection, lock the print process and color standard before choosing between shortlisted fabrics. Approve the artwork on the intended base and confirm repeatability, stretch appearance, and post-process hand feel before the range is finalized.
For training, team, or frequent-pool swimwear, do not select recycled polyester merely because polyester is often associated with performance use. Define the exposure conditions and required service life first. Compare fabrics using the same chlorine, recovery, color, and dimensional-stability criteria, including the behavior of the elastane in each blend.
For a shaping or supportive one-piece, fiber family may be less decisive than fabric weight, modulus, recovery, opacity, lining, and panel construction. A fabric that looks suitable on a composition sheet may feel too rigid, become transparent under stretch, or fail to hold its shape in the finished garment.

Is Recycled Nylon or Recycled Polyester More Sustainable?
“Recycled” alone is not enough to name a universal sustainability winner. The decision depends first on the feedstock and recycling route: bottle-based rPET, textile waste, recovered nylon, and chemically regenerated nylon are not interchangeable systems, and producer-specific impact data should remain attached to the material and methodology assessed.
Durability also matters. A fabric that maintains fit and appearance for the intended product life can be a better sourcing decision than one selected only for its fiber label. This does not justify claiming that durability cancels every other impact; it simply belongs in the decision.
Evidence must match the claim. The RCS and GRS are third-party standards for recycled materials and chain of custody, while GRS adds processing-related social, environmental, and chemical requirements. A supplier’s scope certificate shows that the organization is qualified within a defined scope; it is not, by itself, proof that every fabric or order is certified.
Finally, nylon/elastane and polyester/elastane swim fabrics remain blended synthetic products. Blends can complicate end-of-life recycling, and synthetic textiles can release microfibers; research shows that shedding varies with factors such as fiber, yarn, construction, finishing, and care. The recycled fiber name alone therefore cannot predict either circularity or shedding performance.

What Brands Should Check Before Approving the Fabric
Verify the material claim
Match the claim you plan to publish to the exact evidence available. Review the composition sheet, recycled-content percentage, feedstock description, material name, supplier identity, and current certification scope. If a product-level RCS or GRS claim is planned, confirm the applicable chain-of-custody and transaction evidence for that order rather than relying on a logo, a yarn brochure, or another company’s certificate.
Trademark authorization and certification are separate questions. Using a branded fiber name requires evidence that the selected material is genuinely part of that platform; it does not automatically certify the full garment or validate broader environmental wording.
Test the finished fabric or sample
A specification narrows the choices, but the sample shows whether the material works in the product. Group the approval checks around the intended use:
- Test stretch, recovery, fit stability, and opacity in dry and wet conditions.
- Check shade or print consistency, including the appearance when the fabric is stretched.
- Review the material after relevant chlorine, saltwater, sunscreen, and care exposure.
- Inspect pilling, snagging, seams, edge behavior, and compatibility with the selected lining.
Use the same fabric, color process, lining, and construction planned for production wherever possible. If any of those elements changes after approval, reassess the performance points affected by that change.
Choose the Fabric, Then Prove the Choice
Neither fiber family is the automatic winner. Use three rules to make the decision:

- Shortlist the fiber family based on the required feel, color process, and intended use.
