Flatlock vs. Overlock Seams in Swimwear: What’s the Difference?

A seam can change how a swimsuit looks, stretches, and feels against the body, but its name does not tell the whole story. “Flatlock” may refer to a true industrial flatseam or to a flatter-looking construction made on an overlocker. Overlock also covers more than one possible setup.

That terminology matters when a brand is comparing samples. A low-profile seam is not automatically softer or stronger, and a raised seam allowance is not automatically uncomfortable or unsuitable for fitted swimwear. The useful comparison is the finished construction at a specific garment location, made in the intended fabric and lining.

Flatlock vs. Overlock in Swimwear:

Flatlock generally aims to create a lower-profile join with less stacked fabric beneath the seam. Overlock construction wraps thread around the cut edges and commonly joins the fabric plies with a seam allowance that remains inside the garment.

Neither construction is universally better. Comfort, appearance, stretch, and security also depend on the exact material arrangement, stitch formation, thread, tension, fabric, lining, and sewing quality. One swimsuit may therefore use different constructions in different locations.

Seam Construction and Stitch Type Are Not the Same

A seam describes how pieces of material are arranged and joined. A stitch describes the thread formation used to hold or finish that arrangement. A machine name may suggest how a seam was produced, but it does not replace a complete construction specification.

The distinction is reflected in technical standards. ISO 4915 classifies stitch types, while ISO 4916 separately classifies seam types and is intended to be read with ISO 4915. ASTM D6193 also treats seam configuration, stitch type, thread, material properties, and end use as separate variables in seam engineering.

This is why a note that says only “use flatlock” or “use overlock” can be ambiguous. A useful specification should also show the material arrangement, the required face and reverse appearance, the garment location, and the approved sample result.

What Flatlock Means in Swimwear

“Flatlock” is often used as a visual description, but visually similar seams can be produced through different constructions. For development and sourcing, it helps to separate a true industrial flatseam from an overlocker-produced mock flatlock.

True industrial flatseam

A true industrial flatseam is produced on specialized equipment designed to create a broad, low-profile joined area. Industrial configurations may trim and bring the fabric edges together with little stacked seam allowance, but the exact material arrangement still needs to be confirmed rather than inferred from the name.

One verified industrial example is stitch type 607. Coats identifies it as a four-needle flatseam formation, and Pegasus lists industrial 607 flatseaming equipment with configurations for sewing swimsuits. This is one industrial flatseam example, not a universal definition of flatlock.

A flat profile also does not guarantee the softest surface. Coats’ technical guidance on soft seams notes that needle loops, thread choice, fabric compressibility, and tension can affect how a flatseam feels. Both sides of the finished seam therefore need to be assessed where the construction touches the skin.

Mock flatlock

In this article, mock flatlock means a seam made with an overlocker or serger flatlock setting and then opened or pulled flatter, rather than a true industrial flatseam. The term is useful because overlocker manufacturers themselves offer flatlock settings: BERNINA describes three-thread flatlock seams that are pulled open after sewing, while JUKI lists three-thread flatlock separately from its overlock and cover-stitch patterns.

Depending on the setup, the opened construction may bring edges close together or leave one layer overlapping another. It may create a decorative thread face with a ladder-like formation on the reverse. That result can be useful, but it should not be assumed to have the same structure or performance as an industrial flatseam simply because both lie relatively flat.

What Overlock Means in Swimwear

Overlock construction uses thread formations that wrap around cut fabric edges. It can finish a single edge or join multiple plies while enclosing the edges in the same operation. The joined version commonly leaves a seam allowance on the inside, which gives it a more raised profile than a low-bulk industrial flatseam.

The overedge family includes different thread formations and levels of coverage. Coats’ stitch guide shows that some overedge formations are used only for edge finishing, while others can join two or more plies. Calling a seam “three-thread” or “four-thread” is therefore not enough to predict its complete construction or finished performance.

A well-balanced overlock seam can stretch with knit fabric and remain comfortable in fitted swimwear. Its result depends on the selected formation, seam allowance, thread, tension, fabric thickness, lining, and workmanship. Overlock should be evaluated as an engineered option, not dismissed as an inherently cheap or uncomfortable one.

The clearest comparison is based on the finished seam rather than on a machine label alone.

The table does not establish a winner. A low-profile construction may be useful where seam bulk or a visible technical line matters, while an overlock join may be suitable where enclosed cut edges and the intended internal profile work well. The decision still belongs to the specific location and sample.

When to Consider Flatlock or Overlock in Swimwear

When a lower-profile join matters

A flatseam may be considered where stacked seam allowance would create unwanted bulk, where a seam receives frequent body contact, or where the visible thread pattern is part of the design. These are reasons to test a flatter construction, not proof that every flatseam will feel better.

The face and reverse can have different textures. Thread coverage that looks smooth from the outside may feel more pronounced against the skin, so the intended orientation and final tension need to be checked on the garment.

When edge control and efficient joining matter

Overlock may be considered where the design needs a stretch-compatible join with controlled cut edges and where the retained allowance does not create objectionable bulk. It may also suit locations that are covered by lining or positioned away from sensitive contact, but neither condition automatically makes it the correct choice.

The allowance must still lie in the intended direction, and the seam should move with the fabric without forming an unwanted ridge, wave, or restriction. A well-executed overlock can be appropriate in close-fitting swimwear when those requirements are satisfied.

Why the garment location changes the decision

Seam requirements change across a swimsuit. The construction should be considered together with:

  • body contact, visibility, and the desired surface appearance;
  • the direction of stretch and the load placed on that location;
  • the thickness and recovery of the main fabric and lining;
  • nearby elastic, reinforcement, or supporting panels.

For example, swimwear elastic can change the thickness and tension near an edge, while the panels and internal layers used in tummy-control swimwear can change the load that a nearby seam must accommodate. Those interacting elements are why garment-wide rules are unreliable.

Choose the seam construction that achieves the required comfort, appearance, stretch, and security at that garment location, then confirm it on the actual fabric and sample.

How to Check Flatlock and Overlock on a Sample

A seam-specific check should establish what was actually made and whether it performs as intended. It does not need to repeat the complete garment-approval process.

  1. Inspect both sides. Identify how the fabric edges meet, whether an allowance remains, how the cut edges are covered, and which thread surface will touch the body.
  2. Compare relaxed and stretched states. Look for puckering, excessive restriction, seam opening, skipped stitches, or broken threads without applying an arbitrary pass/fail percentage.
  3. Check the contact surface. Feel for ridges, prominent loops, curled edges, or pressure points at the actual garment location.
  4. Use the intended material combination. Confirm the result with the approved main fabric, lining, elastic, and reinforcement rather than relying on a different development fabric.

How Brands Should Specify the Construction

Seam decisions move through several stages of how swimwear is made, so the instruction must remain clear from development through the swimwear production process. A machine name or a close-up of only the garment face can leave important details unresolved.

A useful construction note should record:

  • the exact garment location and a labeled reference image;
  • the required seam construction and face/reverse appearance;
  • thread color, visible coverage, and which surface faces the body;
  • the required comfort, stretch, appearance, and security, supported by an approved physical sample when possible.

If the factory proposes a different construction, compare the revised sample against those requirements rather than asking whether the replacement is “better” in general. The correct question is whether it achieves the approved result at that location.

Make the Decision on the Actual Sample

Flatlock and overlock are not quality grades. They are construction choices whose results depend on the seam configuration, stitch formation, thread, material, tension, workmanship, and garment location.
